German (Deutsch), is a member of the western group of Germanic languages (and Indo-European languages) and one of the world's major languages.

Worldwide, German accounts for the most written translations into and from a language and according to the Guinness Book of Records German belongs to the ten most spoken languages worldwide. After English, German is the second largest of the Germanic languages.

German is the language with the most native speakers and the third most learned second language in the European Union, after English and French. Spoken by more than 120 million people in 38 countries of the world, German is—like English and French—a pluricentric language with Germany, Austria and Switzerland as the three main centers of usage .
